New View: District 9 (2009)

Some concepts look great on paper, but never pan out on screen. District 9, to me, sounds ridiculous in theory but is an absolute masterpiece of science fiction in motion. And not only because of my love and bias for aliens.

Alien: What is “eviction”?

Newlyread: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

If you’ve done six impossible things this morning, why not round it off with breakfast at Milliways...The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams

Following The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in Adams’ “trilogy in five parts”, this book continues the author’s tradition of irony, satire, and outright ridiculousness. However, despite the abstract concepts (can you picture the entire Universe?) and impossible events (time/space travel…or are those just abstract concepts?), the novel develops less as sci-fi than as social commentary wrapped in English humour. This is precisely where Adams’ genius lies: using other worlds to render our own less alien.
